Monday 7 October: The SELMA Toolkit

Today it is the first day of our Hacking Hate week with a focus on the SELMA Toolkit, which is the main output of the SELMA project. The Toolkit provides education resources to tackle online hate speech with young people aged 11-16.

What’s up today?

1- Take a quick tour around the SELMA Toolkit

We have created a promotional video which takes you on a tour around the Toolkit. Be sure to have a look and share on social media!

2- Explore the SELMA Toolkit resources in German, Greek and Danish

The SELMA Toolkit resources are now also available in German, Greek and Danish. This will greatly push the use of the Toolkit in these countries.

To access the resources in German, Greek or Danish, just navigate the English version of the Toolkit as usual. Once you arrive to a resource page, you will find one tab per language on the resource list. When you click on the tab of your preferred language, you will see the list of resources in that language and you will be able to download them or view them on the website. You can also choose the language of the resources when you do a general export of the activities by clicking on the PDF icon on the top of the page.

For now, we can only offer the materials in English, German, Greek and Danish, but we are exploring the possibility of translating them into other European languages. Keep an eye on our website to stay up to date. If you have an interest to roll out SELMA in your country, please get in touch.

3- Spread the word

To raise awareness of online hate speech, we invite you to share some messages on social media. Let’s make everybody aware of our stand against hate speech!

Start writing a Facebook post or a Tweet answering one of these questions:

  • What do you do to hack online hate?
  • What do you think is the best strategy to react to it?
  • What do you think policy makers and industry should do?

Don’t forget to include the hashtag #HackingHateWeek to allow other people to find your messages and join the conversation.

You can also support the Hacking Hate week by copying the message and image below and sharing them on your social media profile:

I join the #HackingHateWeek because I stand against online #HateSpeech and I believe education has an important role to play. What about you? http://bit.ly/HackingHateWeek

Looking back

As the SELMA project is drawing to a close, this week we also look back to some of our main achievements.

Today, we highlight how SELMA has been inspired by a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) approach to empower young people to critically and creatively engage with the problem of online hate speech and its potential solutions. We want young people to become agents of change in their communities. We aim to prime them for a culture of mutual respect and open debate, based on a contextual understanding of what is at stake. This should happen in dialogue with teachers, parents, professionals, carers, and a wider range of education, industry and society stakeholders. For this reason, we developed guidance on how to use the SELMA Toolkit in a school context, to set up a peer-to-peer scheme, to work with vulnerable groups or from an industry perspective
